Huang and Sheng took an early four-point lead against South Korea’s Keum Jihyeon and Park Hajun and maintained it to win 16-12. Sheng, 19, said he was happy with the win and his personal best performance.

Huang, 17, and Sheng celebrated modestly at first, unlike their excited coach. They smiled and Sheng gave a thumbs-up when bronze medalist Islam Satpayev took a selfie with the medalists.

China also won this event in Tokyo three years ago with Yang Qian and Yang Haoran. Yang Qian had won the first gold medal of those Games in the individual 10-meter air rifle event and received her medal wearing a mask due to pandemic restrictions.

Earlier on Saturday, Kazakhstan’s Alexandra Le and Satpayev won the first medals of the Games by defeating Germany’s Anna Janssen and Maximilian Ulbrich 17-5 for the bronze. Satpayev said he felt perfect about winning third place in his first Olympic competition.
